Introduction:

Social media is part of our lives and has become an essential part of modern society. Moreover, it is the use of media based communication between people. It includes the sharing of person micro blogs, ideas, text messages, pictures, and videos meant to foster a sense of community among people with commonalities that do not necessarily include location.
People always rely on communication to strengthen their relationships. Therefore, it is a tool for communicating and people nowadays can communicate with others easily. A modern technology allows people to bond and connect from other countries. Humanity has invented such a thing as social media for society, which includes all kinds of communications.

History:

Social media has existed for some time, and the earliest ways of communicating across long distances were letters written on a piece of paper. Many years ago, telegraph was invented in 1792, which allowed letters to be sent fast across long distance. However, telegraph messages were short. There were two important discoveries in 1890-1891, the telephone and radio; people still use both tools today. Technologies began to change quickly. The process of social media began in 1970’s. Computers weren’t popular back in the 70’s and early 80’s, and people rarely used computers, but then it was becoming more common. Social media began to develop and the first acknowledge social media site was called Six Degrees, based on the Six Degrees of Separation Theory, and it existed from 1997 until 2001. At that time, Internet was getting popular. After that, People have created websites and blogging sites that increased data communication speed between others. However, blogs don’t offer the level of instant communication that we associate with social media, but they offer a place to make thoughts and personal communications available to a wide range of people, and accept comments about those things. From there, we see the emergence of ICQ, which was contemporary to the AOL messenger, but with a less polished interface. By 2000, the Internet was global and we begin seeing more people engaging socially online. However, it was little more than a passing fancy at that point. We did not see much new connecting in chat rooms and other Internet social places, but we did see people engaging in them. It was not until 2003 that the great surge of social media happened. With it came MySpace, a site for constructing a profile and interacting based on the profile, much more like Facebook that came out in 2004. When Facebook took over social media world, other sites began to specialize. LinkedIn is a social site constructed around professional ventures, Flicker (2010), Photobucket and Instagram (2007), all focuses on photograph sharing, and MySpace has become mostly a site for musicians to promote their latest projects. The popularity of Facebook inspired other gurus to try their hand at social media, including the group that would eventually create a platform of short messages sent out over a massive collection of readers in the form of public text message: Twitter. Business began using social media to promote their services, and individuals began linking their social media accounts to one another. This led to adaptation of various plugins, such as buttons that make a direct link either from one’s social media account to another Internet location. WordPress blogs is a fine example of that, with their immediate access to links, which allow users to share their latest blogs.

Advantages:

Social media is a great power that made our lives simple by communicating easily with other people. Today, people can talk to each other without leaving the house, city or even the country. Also, it promotes the rekindling of relationships that would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible, to revisit, such as, high school classmates. It permits the communicating of ones thoughts over a wider audience with little extra effort, and it enables businesses and companies to advertise with less overhead.  Studies has shown, recently the government is using social media more and proven that almost 40% of federal workers were not using it. Furthermore, the use of social media within government will develop communication among other agencies, workers, and the public. According to Ken Blanchard, “He believes that frequent and orchestrated communication through many different kinds of media is key to successful initiative”.

Conclusion:

This is the true value of social media for your online presence. In an era of greater transparency and authenticity, social media is rapidly delivering a new standard of interacting more person to person. Social Media not only plays a significant role in enhancing a company’s brand, it is also a tool that helps you connect with your audience and build professional relationships. Furthermore, Social media is part of the human activity and it takes a great impact in our modern society. Despite the disadvantages of social media, we could still benefit from its advantages.
